75 When his mother, Elizabeth, died Adam's father, George, remarried . Claire was very mean to all the children. The children had left home to get away from her as soon as they could, leaving between the ages of 14-15. Because of her Adam swore to his children he would never remarry after Christina died. Even though there was a woman he saw after Christina died, and the children liked her, he never married her.

Adam was a coal miner and he worked for the railroad. When the coal miners went on strike he would lay brick and do other odd jobs. After he retired he delivered newspapers in Riverton.

He lived on Adams Street (213?) in Riverton, Illinois, and had been a resident for over 70 years. When I visited his gravesite (August 30, 1997), my Great-Aunt Freda told me Adam had planted the two trees that were next to it. He is buried in Oakhill Cemetery in Riverton, Illinois.

Adam was Catholic until he married Christina. Christina was Protestant and Adam converted. Claudine, my mother, said that this caused a little bit of "friction" in the family.

Claudine was Adam's favorite. She had lived with Adam and the family for a few years. My Great-Aunt Freda said that when the kids wanted an ice cream or something special, they would always send Claudine to ask Adam because he always said yes to her.

In Adam & Christina's Bible, his birthday is written as January 25, 1878. However, his Birth Certificate from Germany lists his birthday as January 15, 1878.

One story told to me by my mother (Claudine HAWKINS), is that Adam had a cross burned in his yard. The cross was not burned in his yard because of any racial issues, but because he was so mean to his children.

89 Johann Georg Rheude was born October 21, 1839 in Sondernheim, Germany. It is known that Georg had a brother, Heinrich and that their father's name was Johann.
At the age of 23, on July 14, 1863, George Rheude married Elisabeth Rund (b: 11 JUL 1841 in Germany).

It has been said that Georg had received the Iron Cross. If true, this probably would have been during the Franco-Prussian war (15 JUL 1870 - 1 MAR 1871). Georg would have been 31 - 32 years of age at that time.

On March 10, 1880, the steamship Rotterdam landed in new York at Castle Gardens. After the immigration process, it is believed that Georg then made his way to Pesotum, Illinois where two uncles of his wife, Elisabeth, lived and farmed. Less than a month later, June 2, 1880, the ship Herder landed in new York. On board were Georg's wife and children.

Elisabeth went into labor on October 29, 1881. eight days later, on November 6, 1881, Elisabeth and the baby died. Elisabeth's Death Record states that she died at 5:00 a.m. with the cause listed as "purporal peritonitis following difficult labor, with shoulder presentation." Elisabeth's physician was S.S. Salisbury, the undertaker was L.C. Burr. Elisabeth's place of burial is listed as the "Catholic Cemetery" in Tolono, Illinois, buried on November 7, 1881.

The Rev. Dennis H. O'Riley sent a note to me saying:

"Because of a fire in 1929, any records that go back to 1880 and after that were destroyed. It is very possible that Elizabeth Rheude was buried here, but we have no record."

Because of the fire, it will be impossible to find out exactly where Elisabeth is buried. I was told that she never had a grave marker.

Georg remarried in 1882 to Claire. Claire was born in February of 1860 in germany, having come to America in 1880. Georg and Claire lived at 13088 Holloway Street in Lafayette, Tippecanoe County, Indiana. They had no children.

March 16, 1883, Georg renounced all allegiances to William, Emperor of Germany. Georg became a citizen of the United States of America on September 4, 1888

Georg was a shoemaker by trade, and sexton for the Jewish Cemetery. His obituaries state that he was an officer in the Germany army and had served in two wars before coming to the United States. He was a member of Saint Boniface Catholic Church.

On June 21, 1901 at 2:00 p.m., Georg died at home. Services were held at the St. Boniface Church in Lafayette at 9:00 a.m. His obituaries state that he was to be sent to Illinois to be buried - possibly next to his first wife, Elisabeth. Georg is buried in St. Boniface Cemetery, Lafayette, Indiana.

96 These were found in notes by Rose (Rheude) Scheetz.

Mom and Dad celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary Monday, January 25, 1935 with High Mass and Benediction at 8:15 a.m.

Dad always took us to be baptized and would forget the name Mom wanted so added what he wanted. Mary thought her second name was Adelaide in German pronounced (Oddlight) so she didn't want it announced from the altar for three Sundays. Father Stetter wondered why and said Cecelia was a pretty name so that's when Mary found out her real second name. Dad took me and Mrs. Louise Anstett with him so he added Louise onto the name Mom wanted for me even though I had a sister named Louise.

Rose lived in Lafayette, Indiana.
